RHYTHM & TEMPO

We use the words “rhythm” and “tempo” interchangeably, but they describe different aspects of timing.  Rhythm doesn’t mean faster or slower.  It just means regular.  Tempo doesn’t mean consistent.  It just means speed.  It’s like a metronome.  The clicks are spaced regularly and they repeat.  That’s rhythm.  If you shorten or lengthen the time between them, you’d be adjusting the tempo.  Together they create reliable timing, in this case for musicians.

When your timing is off, think about which of these is being affected.  Are you rushing your moves?  Your tempo is off.  Slow down.  Is your load easy, but your attack rushed?  Your rhythm is off.  Give each move enough time and space to complete before the next one needs to happen.  Maybe start a little earlier, or give yourself some physical space, like backing off the plate.

So, what disrupted your timing?  Is it a bad habit you’ve slipped into on your own, or is your opponent messing with you?  Broken timing means vulnerability, so protect your rhythm and tempo by staying focused.  But this works both ways.  What can you do to impose your tempo on his game, disrupt his rhythm, and make him vulnerable?
