Summer Reset
It’s time to switch teams. Whether you just played for a championship high school or college team, or you were the worst team in your conference, your school season is over. Summer ball is starting up, and it’s time to wipe the slate clean and start anew.
If you had a great school season, you can build on that success. If you had a rough year, you can recalibrate, consider your weak points, and refocus your efforts on improving them. Either way, you get to start again fresh.
But the temptation is to play only for yourself, caring less about the team’s success than your own. Don’t do that. Your mindset is a skill, the same as your swing as a hitter or your blocking as a catcher. If you didn’t take one practice swing all summer, would your swing improve? If you didn’t block one ball in practice, would you become a better blocker? If you don’t play to win because you care only about your own performance, will you become a winning teammate?
Being a winning teammate is arguably your most important skill. Yes, you need to be able to hit, run and throw, but quite honestly, a lot of players can do that. We’ve all played with that teammate who cares nothing about the rest of the guys, and even if he’s a pretty good player, he makes his team worse. He raises the stress level. He makes people roll their eyes. It’s all about him. If you simply don’t care about your team or your teammates, it shows. Your coaches see it. Your teammates see it. And scouts see it too.
Don’t be that guy.
Even though it’s summer ball, find a way to win the game. Find a way to help your teammates. Your team will win more games. Your teammates will play better. And you will play your best baseball.
Be the teammate you would want on your team.
Win Every Pitch!
