BaseballDOJO MINDSET: DOES THIS MATTER?

DOES THIS MATTER?

Does what you’re doing matter?

If not, stop. You’re wasting time. If yes, focus on it. But what really matters? Avoid “eyewash”—busy work to appear busy.

How often do you use the skill you’re practicing? For example, is catching foul pop-ups worth 45 minutes? You may get a few over a summer, so you’ll need the skill. I’d rather spend that time receiving. Around half of pitches thrown in a game reach me as the catcher, which is about 75 times in a big league game. I’ll use that skill more than catching pop-ups.

Or maybe you should work on blocking, which could prevent a runner from advancing 90 feet or crossing the plate. You may only do it a few times in a game, but that’s more than a couple of times over the summer, and preventing stolen bases helps your team more than a few pop-ups.

Don’t get me wrong. Catching pop-ups is important, but college recruiters and pro scouts don’t care. They want to see if you can receive, block, and throw. Their teams depend more on catchers with those skills.

So, what are you doing right now?
