Miami Marlins
Eddy Rodriguez was hired as MLB Catching coach November 2019 after being Catching Coordinator with the Los Angeles Angels. November 2021 Rodriguez had the MiLB Catching Coordinator duties assigned to him as well. Currently overseeing development of All Catchers (MLB/MILB) in the organization. After the 2021 season the Marlins Organization went from the #22in 2019 Receiving organization to #2 in Extra Strikes Gained. In Blocking the organization is ranked #3 and Throwing #6.
Los Angeles Angels
Rodriguez first full-time coaching position in professional baseball was Catching Coordinator in 2019. In a quick period of time, the organization developed a holistic approach catching program encompassing physical preparation, skill acquisition, reporting, and professional development. Angels went from #26 in Extra Strikes Gained in 2018 to #6 after the 2019 season.
Career as a Professional Catcher
Spent 12 years playing for Cincinnati Reds, San Diego Padres, Tampa Bay Rays, and New York Yankees. Carried a reputation of being a defensive Pitcher first catcher. Rodríguez made his Major League debut on August 2, 2012, against the Cincinnati Reds. He hit a home run off Johnny Cueto in his first major league at-bat. Rodríguez made two starts for the Padres in 2012, going 1 for 5 at the plate.
University of Miami
Rodriguez attended the University of Miami from 2003-2006 where the Canes made it to the College World Series 2 out 3 years during his career. In 2006 Rodriguez was selected as 1st Team All-ACC Catcher and Johnny Bench Award (Nations Best Catcher) Runner Up. The Cincinnati Reds selected Rodriguez in the 20th Round of 2006 Draft. He signed his first professional contract and Debuted in the GCL.
Early Life
Rodríguez was born in Villa Clara Province, Cuba. His parents, Edilio and Ylya Rodriguez, operated a farm and his father fished. The Rodríguez family, consisting of Eddy, his parents, his sister Yanisbet, and his cousin Carlos, defected from Cuba when he was eight years old on his father’s fishing boat. Eddy was unaware of the defection until they were at sea. Their boat nearly capsized in a storm and they ran out of food, resorting to eating ground coffee beans, before they were discovered by the United States Coast Guard. The family settled in Miami and Rodríguez graduated from Coral Gables Senior High School in Coral Gables, Florida.
