GOALS
As we head into the fall baseball season, this is the perfect time to think about the kind of goals you want to set for yourself. The best players don’t just focus on stats or end results—they focus on the process that gets them there. Process goals are all about the habits and routines you can control every day: things like committing to a consistent pre-pitch routine, keeping your breathing steady under pressure, or tracking quality at-bats instead of just hits. These goals are functional, they’re expansive, and they prepare you for the challenges ahead.
On the flip side, results-oriented goals—like chasing a certain batting average or setting a number of wins—tend to box players in. They create pressure you don’t need and put your attention on things you can’t fully control. Baseball already comes with enough stress; piling on more by chasing outcomes often just makes the game harder. By staying focused on process, you give yourself the freedom to grow, improve, and play with more confidence.
Here’s the best part: process goals almost always lead to better results in the long run. When you make your routines second nature and build strong habits this fall, you’ll be ready to step on the field in the spring with a foundation that supports success. So, as you set your goals for this season, think less about the numbers and more about the steps that will get you there. If you take care of the process now, the results will take care of themselves later.
So what will your focus be: the process or the result?
