SIZE DOESN’T DEFINE SUCCESS: Lessons from the Midsummer Classic

We’re in the week of the Midsummer Classic—the All-Star Game in Atlanta, Georgia, home to one of the most storied Major League teams and one of the most beautiful ballparks in the majors.

The talk of the town? A switch-hitting catcher who’s not only leading the major leagues with 38 home runs at the break, but doing it from both sides of the plate while being the top receiver in the American League and arguably the best defensive catcher currently in the majors.

Breaking the Size Barrier
None of this success is news to the baseball world, but here’s what’s interesting: I’m sure at some point throughout his career, he was told he was too tall or too big to be a catcher. People told him what he couldn’t do because of his size.

At 6’2″ and 240 pounds, he’s a big human being. But there are ways to work around size limitations and continue to succeed. He’s not the first tall catcher to dominate at the Major League level—Matt Wieters succeeded as a tall catcher not too long ago, and the list goes on of guys who were big, lanky, and tall yet turned themselves into successful major leaguers.

The Beautiful Contradiction of Baseball
Although it’s not the norm, baseball is a game where Aaron Judge and Jose Altuve are both successful players at the exact same level. Regardless of your size, whatever position you excel at, don’t let anyone tell you what you can and can’t do based on your physical attributes.

I’m sure Altuve was told plenty of times he was too small to play this game competitively. I’m sure Judge was told he was too big and would never move fast enough to become the player he’s turned himself into.

The Simple Message
Be good at what you do. Size, shape, and other people’s opinions will not be the determining factors of your success. Absolutely dominate what you do.
Because one day, you might be winning the Home Run Derby, leading the major leagues both defensively and offensively, with your dad throwing you batting practice and your brother catching you on the biggest stage in the world.

Your size doesn’t define your ceiling—your work ethic does.
