INTENT

Can you have a good game at the plate despite going 0-for-4? Initially, it seems like a miserable game, and if you only care about results, you’re right.

But consider these scenarios: driving in four runs from third base with less than two outs, lining out four times in a row, or the official scorekeeper making four bad calls on borderline hit/error plays. In any of these situations, your day wasn’t as bad as you felt. But you’re judging it by the result, which is out of your control. More importantly, what were you trying to achieve in those at-bats?

What was your intent?

What pitch were you looking for?

Did you wait for it or chase something else?

When you got it, did you take a rip or watch it go by?

These answers are more crucial for your development as a hitter than whether you got a hit this time. Did you execute your intent? If yes, good job, and you should expect more hits down the road by keeping the same approach. If no, learn and adjust so the hits will come next time.

Then, let it go and move on…
