CONSISTENCY OVER RESULTS: Why Details Drive Success for Catchers

As the season progresses, it’s easy to lose sight of the daily routines that help a player improve and perform at their best. Often, in-game results, like going 4-for-4 at the plate or throwing out a runner, motivate players to practice more. Similarly, playing time or team wins and losses can influence their desire to put in extra work.

However, it’s important to remember that consistency is key, regardless of how the season is going.

Whether in-season or off-season, sticking to a disciplined daily routine is what separates good players from great ones. It’s easy to think that a lack of consistency is due to coaches not dedicating enough time to catchers, but in reality, this doesn’t change much until a player reaches the Major League level, where every team has a dedicated catching coach. Relying on others to ensure a catcher stays on track with their daily routine isn’t the best approach. Success in the game requires ownership of their own process.

Catching is undoubtedly the most demanding position, but it also provides the most opportunities to impact the game in countless ways. Encourage your player to take ownership of their development. Make sure they continue lifting weights 3-4 times a week, stay on top of receiving, blocking, and throwing drills, maintain a balanced diet, and learn how to manage a busy schedule. And above all, remind them to REST. Most importantly, remind them to compete with everything they have, every single day.

Success is a journey, and it’s up to them to stay consistent, no matter what the scoreboard says.
