This one goes out to the parents

You invest a lot in educating your kids: time, money, attention, and emotion. And you do it gladly because you love them and want to give them every possible chance to succeed in everything they do. But like any good investor, you should take a hard look at the return on your investments.

What’s the goal?  If the goal is to play in the big leagues, great.  I’m all for aiming high.  A very small percentage of players make it to the major leagues.  I’m not saying your kid won’t make it.  I’m not saying that at all.  If I didn’t believe it was possible, I wouldn’t teach in the first place.  I honestly believe that if did it, anybody can.  But is this our only measure of success?  If they don’t “make it,” what else will your investment have bought?

What are they learning?  We live in a time when technology dominates, and everything we do is quantified and compared.  Are they learning that their only worth is the number the tech machine spits back at them?  And if that measurement falls short, they’ve fallen short as a person?  Isn’t your kid worth a lot more than his exit velocity, his spin rate, or the number of extra strikes he gains?

There’s a better way.  When used properly, today’s tech can give us valuable insights into how to improve our skills on a baseball field.  That’s it.  It just shows where they are on their journey.  That’s all.  More important than that number is an environment that nurtures their growth as human beings.  Skills like teamwork, communication, grit, focus, emotional regulation and confidence are skills they will need in every aspect of their lives, not just baseball.  If he’s not learning these skills, he’s in the wrong place, and you’re not getting a good return on your investment.  And if he’s being taught that loss means failure, instead of an opportunity for improvement, he’s being set up for bigger problems in his life down the road.

So ask yourself, “Is my son getting what he needs to grow into a strong, independent, confident man?”  If the answer is no, you’re not getting your money’s worth.

There’s a better way…
