AMAZON PRIME CONFIDENCE
As the season unfolds, high school and college athletes are beginning to evaluate themselves, often based on one thing: results. This can be a dangerous mindset in baseball, a sport that seems specifically designed to test how a player reacts to failure.
One phrase we often hear during struggles is: “Come on, you need to have confidence” or “You’re struggling because you lack confidence.” And all I can think is… if only it were that easy. Imagine if we could simply hop on Amazon, order confidence, and have it delivered overnight. That would be incredible.
But confidence isn’t something that can be bought—it’s built over time through dedication and effort. No matter our age, we all have some level of self-awareness. We inherently understand where we stand when comparing ourselves to others. But trying to “fake it” and convince ourselves that we’re the best isn’t the recipe for sustained success. Confidence typically stems from two things: work ethic and talent (as reflected in game results). It’s rare that anyone says, “That player is so confident,” if they haven’t had positive results on the field.
Talent is like a lottery—it doesn’t land in everyone’s lap. But work ethic? That’s something we can control. During the off-season, most athletes embrace the grind. But as the season progresses and schedules fill up, it becomes harder to balance. It’s even tougher when you’re struggling and your confidence takes a hit. You might notice your chest isn’t as broad walking through the hallways or stepping into the locker room.
But here’s the reality: when you face failure, that’s when you need to double down on your routines. The season is not the time to abandon your strength training (3-5 times a week), your defensive work, or your hitting drills. Sometimes, you might feel like your school’s practice design doesn’t align with your needs, and it becomes an easy excuse. Find the time.
Baseball is an incredible ride, full of highs and lows. If you want real confidence, the kind that will carry you through adversity, it’s simple:
Work your tails off relentlessly—no matter the outcome.
